Types of Spinal Cord Injuries in Southwestern Ohio

Spinal cord injuries are generally classified as complete or incomplete. The terminology refers to the level of sensory or motor function that exists below the neurological level of the injury. When a person has some sensory or motor function, it is considered an incomplete injury; when a spinal cord is completely severed and/or the person has no sensory or motor function below the point of the injury, it is considered a complete spinal cord injury.

A few of the most common spinal cord injuries include:

• Tetraplegia (Quadriplegia) — Damage to the cervical spinal cord that causes paralysis of all limbs;
• Paraplegia — Damage to the thoracic spinal cord that causes loss of sensory or motor function in the lower half of the body;
• Triplegia — A spinal cord injury that causes paralysis of three limbs, typically one arm and both legs although both arms and one leg is also possible; and
• Cauda Equina Syndrome — Damage to the nerves below the first and second lumbar nerves can result in partial or complete loss of movement and sensation to the legs, bladder, bowel and sexual organs.

People who have suffered incomplete spinal cord injuries may retain some feeling, but they may have little or no movement in certain parts of their bodies. Common incomplete spinal cord injuries include:

• Anterior Cord Syndrome — Damage to the front portion of the spinal cord can cause loss of motor function, pain sensation, and temperature sensation below the point of the injury, although the sense of touch may remain;
• Brown-Séquard Syndrome — Damage to one side of the spinal cord can cause loss of motor function on the same side of the body as the injury while the opposite side may lose temperature and pain sensations;
• Central Cord Syndrome — Damage to the cervical spinal cord (the center of the spinal cord) can result in loss of leg function and some bladder and bowel function, although recovery may be possible in these cases; and
• Posterior Cord Syndrome — Damage to the back portion of the spinal cord can cause difficulty coordinating movement of limbs although motor function and sensation of pain, temperature, and touch generally remain.
